Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: joining us our psychiatrist Dr Sue Vara and clinical psychologist and author of the book The Myth of sex addiction Dr David lay welcome to both of you thank you for being here so Dr vares there is a growing school of thought that that basically claims that pornography can be addictive and what do you think of that do you think that’s true you know I think that anything that has its pleasure and reward um component to it has the ability to be addictive so the um pleasure Center in the brain um has dopamine which is one of the reward hormones and we find that just the way that someone could perhaps take a drink you’re a social Drinker and use in moderation you can also have a tendency to use porn in moderation but some people cannot can you explain what we’re looking at in the terms of these brain scans yes so you know there was a study that came out as mentioned in the University of Cambridge and they talked about that um people who are compulsive porn Watchers will have more activities in the brain areas that are lit up here on MRI as compared to people who were not so compulsive porn users in these areas of the brain will have more stimulation and activity just the way someone who might be addicted to alcohol has when they’re watching alcohol ads and Dr Le you kind of think this whole notion of being addicted to porn is a bunch of bunk is that accurate I think it’s problematic I think it changes the conversation um I actually have a paper that’s coming out soon actually that that just released that looks at the porn addiction concept it’s an academic paper and it’s the first academic review of the concept of porn addiction and we find that really applying the concept of addiction first it’s not scientifically or clinically useful but secondly it distracts us from talking about some of the real issues it takes away from talking about the choices that people make they issues of communication issues of relationship and issues of libido it focuses instead on the porn so it takes away the personal responsibility ABS but would you concede that perhaps it’s a problem with impulse control where maybe brain chemistry isn’t altered but it’s a behavioral issue again I think the the addiction model is too simplistic when we apply it to behaviors like this because people have lots and lots of reasons why they have problems with this impulse control can be one of them sometimes many times in fact partners want different levels of sex and pornography can be a healthy safe way in which people might try and satisfy that sex drive or that libido without going outside the marriage what do you think of that Dr Varma you know I think that porn has its place in our repertoire of behavior it’s not the porn we don’t need to vilify the porn but we have to understand that often people do have loss of control over behavior and they continue to use despite knowing that they consequences if someone is losing their job if their spouse is saying I have one foot out the door to me that says that you no longer have control of this Behavior and the problem that I have by saying that it’s the person is problematic is that when you put complete responsibility into somebody you’re saying at the same time that you have the ability to change and you’re choosing not to and that affects whether a person gets help or not in my mind and there’s something uh called porn related erectile dysfunction which is a relatively new phenomenon and that is basically someone can only uh be a through pornography and not through actual relationships is that what that is yes and you know when when we first start out you know some of these people who are watching porn it may be as a supplement but over time it takes over where the person can no longer feel aroused by their partner so that they want sex in a certain way if it’s masturbation only they can understand the touch and the pleasure and it’s also very high-speed internet access so that you’re getting instant gratification in a way that your pleasure uh in a way that your partner cannot arouse you anymore Gabe deem from Irving Texas is here and he says he has actually experienced this and and Gabe tell us what happened to you um well my story is uh a lot different than Craigs right um I’m I’m what you would consider a opportunity addict and I’m the first generation that had access to high-speed internet porn as who just said and um I was exposed like Craig at the age of eight but I didn’t have any trauma or abuse that uh led me to use pornography um you were just curious yeah I mean I was just a boy of course I’m going to like looking at naked girls then at the age of 12 I got high-speed internet and it wasn’t an issue that led me to watch porn it was just that I liked it and I wanted to and over time you know I I became sexually active when I was 14 and so I was having sex and watching porn all through high school and into college and um eventually I lost my motivation and drive for life but that didn’t catch my attention what caught my attention was it became harder for me to get aroused by girls in real life so how did you change that or did you well well I did what anyone would do I was 23 and healthy and had no idea what was wrong with me so I went to Google and I typed in you know young guy problem and and why do I suddenly feel like Dr what else you going to type right so so I found forums right where hundreds thousands of guys my age teenagers are talking about having erectile dysfunction and they all had one thing in common years of internet porn use and the key is internet because it’s novel you can always click to something something more shocking and it over stimulates our brain um so I saw just to to give up porn you can regain sexual function so as a young man that didn’t have a penis that worked that was pretty strong motivation wow so so is everything a okay in this department yes yes yeah it it took me nine months to recover um so it was clear that something was happening in my brain and I really had some deep uh conditioning for pornography wow that’s so interesting this is really important there is not a shred of scientific evidence evidence that links erectile dysfunction with pornography use in most of the studies that are being published it has to do with smoking drug use Health stress relationship and anxiety well certainly I think probably this is going to be studied more from a scientific point of view but and and we can debate whether it’s addictive or not but I guess the the question is how do you know as a couple when too much is too much when you’ve crossed that line and watching pornography has driven a wedge between you and your partner is there any rule of thumb that we can leave people with I think couples absolutely need to talk with each other I think we need to be talking about sexuality much more learning about sex from porn is like learning how to shoot a handgun by watching Hollywood action movies somebody’s going to get hurt we should be talking about what pornography means with sex couples should be talking with each other about their sexual desires their sexual fantasies whether born is or isn’t a part of their lives we should be talking about this with young men and women as well and I think when the female partner or the other partner is saying that I feel alienated I feel like you’re not sexually attracted to me anymore you cannot get aroused without having pornography then I feel that this is now crossed over with instead of it being one part of the repertoire this is the entire main meal that to me says it’s a problem well it’s a very interesting conversation I you know and if we want to encourage couples to talk about it I guess this is a good place to start startart .
