Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: we are St Paul’s youth ministry in Princeton New Jersey connecting faith and life and you’re watching real estate TV [Applause] [Music] very much [Music] I think that the church teaches that we should stay pure until we’re married I believe Chastity means of Court not not having sex before marriage whereas um abstinence means totally refraining from sex so like um I guess it would be like celibacy the idea of Chastity is hard for teens because they’re influenced so much by media honestly I think just culturally um it’s very unpopular the the notion of trustedy I think that the church is trying to help us to be better people and I don’t think it’s trying to like limit our freedom at all we’re probably all familiar with the popular marketing slogan sex sells seems that everywhere we look these days our media culture is only interested in placing value on people’s bodies trying to fit into modern culture may make us feel uneasy because we know that kind of sexualization goes against what we believe that our faith teaches us how to love and honor others appropriately there are many kinds of love and we express each of them differently depending on who we’re talking about for example the way we love our dog and the way we love our parents are two completely different things as Catholics we are called to have a special kind of love for our other half we need to be chaste so that we can fully enter into a pure and holy Union with our spouse Chastity that’s what we’ll be talking about today hi everyone I’m Maddie and I’m Anthony and this is real Faith TV first we’d like to thank the members of Saint Paul’s Parish youth ministry from Princeton New Jersey for helping us open the show today and for sharing with us their thoughts on Chastity before we meet our studio guests let’s meet our Spotlight guest Kate Mayer the youth minister at St Paul church in Princeton she’ll explain to us just what exactly Chastity is all about and how it’s different from abstinence I think it is particularly challenging today for teens or for really anybody to First understand and then Embrace uh you know the church’s teaching on Chastity and and sexuality Chastity doesn’t mean um not having sex Chastity means using our sexuality in the way that God has called us to use it so for a single person then the call to Chastity does mean a call to celibacy whether that’s temporary celibacy because they’re not yet married or permanent celibacy because they are called to the priesthood of religious life a single person is always called to Chastity in the same way a married couple is always called to Chastity when a married couple makes their wedding vows they promise that their marriage will be free total fruitful and faithful it needs to be all four of those things in order for them to be living their marriage in terms of Chastity the differences between Chastity and abstinence or we think that Chastity is the same thing as abstinence Chastity is something that we are all called to no matter where we are in our lives many people are called to abstinence either for a time in their life or for their lifetime so Chastity is that call to Holiness and that call to use our sexuality in the way that God has designed it whereas abstinence or celibacy is abstaining from the act of sex I think it’s important to note that there is a difference between the two and I think that’s where a lot of teens get caught up in the difference between uh the different vocabulary words of Chastity and of abstinence you know I really like how she said that there’s Chastity in single life but there’s also Chastity and married life too and a lot of people think that Chastity ends once you get to married life but that’s not that’s not really true at all and I think what she said was really nice well let’s see what our studio guests have to say on the subject okay then they are Rebecca Monique John Ella and Juliana [Music] so why do you think Chastity tends to be a confusing concept for us up until a year ago I didn’t even know what Chastity was honestly like I knew the church was teaching you shouldn’t have sex before you’re married but I didn’t understand that Chastity was a way of life and you know we see things on the media that it’s just like sex sells like everything is you know skin is exposed and people you know are just like not even thinking about love is what love is anymore and I feel like that just mixes the messages between what’s okay and what’s not well I feel like what also makes it hard is like it’s in human nature like it’s the way we’re wired is to have sex and like procreate right I don’t really think that it’s necessarily confusing I think it can be almost like a daunting sort of subject area and I think a lot of people are afraid to really ask questions about like how our faith stands on that area so I think it’s just like almost un like not really touchable kind of it’s uncomfortable and so it’s overlooked as Kate mentioned the church teaches that Chastity means abstinence from sexual relations before marriage and complete Fidelity to one spouse during marriage this means more than refraining from sexual activity until we’re married it means not putting ourselves in positions where we are tempted by sexually impure thoughts and images by living in this way we can be considered pure however many times we equate Purity with virginity and that once virginity is lost a person is incapable of ever being pure again in the eyes of God this is not true virginity is itself a beautiful gift meant for a future husband or wife but as Kate describes this idea can become distorted when we fail to recognize our lifelong call to Chastity and the fact that no matter what sins were committed in the past we should always be striving towards Chastity let’s see I think often we get caught up in talking about our virginity as opposed to our Chastity and our virginity is important when we are Discerning a vocation to marriage and we want to be able to you know give the gift of our virginity to our spouse when we get married so I’ve talked to teens who have had a sexual experience that they have lost their virginity or they feel like they’ve tainted their virginity and their Outlook becomes well I don’t have to try for tests anymore because I’m already ruined I already lost it it doesn’t matter anymore because I’m not a virgin and that’s just not true because God wants us in whatever state that we’re in in our lives to be striving for Chastity even if we have made a mistake in the past or we have sinned in the past God wants us to continue to strive for Chastity and God in his great Mercy is always available to us in the sacrament of reconciliation so that if we have made a mistake in the past and it has tainted or or hurt our virginity in some way that we can still bring that to God and say look I did this I messed up and I want to repair my relationship with you God and um and then I want to move forward and strive for chastity so how can chassis help those who struggle with their loss of virginity or thoughts of impurity um well every first write of every month I attend a vigil and it’s from Friday night Saturday morning and during the vigil all the teens have to leave their pews and they have to kneel in front of the Altar and we recite a chastity prayer and I think that I know some people whom I’ve given the prayer to that have gone through the loss of their virginity and it has helped them to realize that even though they’ve lost their virginity they haven’t lost their purity and like God still sees them as pure in his eyes I love the whole concept of um virgin reborn and like I always think of that guy that was on The Bachelor a while back this like good looking guy you know had everything going and then like right on the cover of the magazine it’s posted you know the Virgin Bachelor and he wasn’t actually a virgin he was a virgin reborn but he changed what he believed and now he has his morals in check and like I feel like if you honestly want to start over like that like God’s willing to give you a second chance but I also think that doesn’t mean that we can throw it away to begin with and experience these experiences just to know that we’re going to get them back again yeah like you should you should want to be chased from the beginning but I feel like if you turn around and you realize what you were doing was wrong like you’re totally forgiven in June of 2002 14 year old Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home and held in captivity until her Escape nine months later during her time in captivity she endured the horrendous trauma of being the victim of repeated sexual assaults nearly breaking her dignity and her spirit to overcome the horror our Spotlight guest Kate shares with us the story of Elizabeth’s bravery and how it has affected her views on abstinence-only teachings let’s check it out Elizabeth Smart is a young woman she’s in her mid-20s and when she was a young teen she was abducted from her home she basically became a sex slave to her abductors she was found and and was you know has been since reunited with her family and part of her story she talks a lot now about abstinence only education which she’s actually against she was raised in a subculture where she was very much taught that once she lost her virginity she would be dirty used up unwanted and so when she lost her virginity to her abductor against her own will she had those feelings within herself during her time in captivity she wouldn’t try and alert someone that she had been abducted and try and break free because she felt she had no value of course God’s first choice for us is that we would maintain our virginity for our spouse if we are called to marriage that doesn’t mean that once we lose our virginity for whatever reason that that’s a reason to throw all everything with about Chastity out the door there’s nothing that someone else can do to take our dignity away from us and through the sacrament of reconciliation you know if we have sinned then God is able to you know restore our our Grace our dignity has been hurt to be able to restore that through that Sacrament that he makes all things new there’s no sin that’s too big or too great for him to forgive and so I feel that we are called in the church to educate teens about abstinence in a good way that it that gives them a healthy view of the Dignity of the person and their virginity and Chastity each sort of in their own right Kate was talking about the dignity that God created each of us with how does chastity help us to recognize this I really like how in what she was saying that she said that no one can take our dignity away from us for me I think that Chastity helps to reinforce the idea that my body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit we were talking to Kate before the show and I asked her about like you know where a line is drawn she said that like you want what’s best for that other person and what’s going to get them to Heaven you know and like if you’re gonna have sex before marriage is or that’s breaking commitment you know like that’s not going to get them closer to Heaven that’s not something everyone wants to hear because yeah they want it so bad but they know that they’re not helping that other person with what they’re doing yeah when we practice Chastity in our relationships and in our personal lives we experience dignity in its fullest form we show dignity to ourselves when we make a conscious effort to not give in to The Temptations around us we give dignity to others when we show our love and concern for them as individuals and not as objects and we also show respect to God when we trust his guidance and his path for us when we enter into a pure relationship with another person and we can make a true friend in the process make no mistake the church regards sex is a wonderful gift from God which holds a sacred place within marriage let’s go back to Kate where she’ll share more about what the church teaches about sex and how through our selfish desires sex can become disordered through lust so the church teaching about sex is actually really a beautiful teaching and I think that a lot of us get bogged down with the do Nots of sex and we forget that sex is really a good thing sex was created by God and I think sometimes we forget that we think that like we came up with it on our own um but we didn’t it was in our design and so God created sex and he created it for two purposes only the first is so that we could continue the human race we use sex to procreate and sort of have a participation in God with God in creation the second one is to have that bond between two people that would be exclusive to those two people and that is such a strong bond that it bonds them together for Life bonding in babies is sort of the shortcut that we use a lot and if we’re having sex only because it feels good and not for the two purposes that God created it to procreate and to bond with that one person then we can get a disordered view of sex and that’s what can lead to lust which would be a selfie a use of sex for a selfish purpose how have your views on sex been shaped by society and popular culture I definitely think that in the media and on TV some commercials especially like Victoria’s Secret they advertise it the wrong way I think that in today’s society that sex is just glorified as something that you need to do in order to be cool or to be popular or to be accepted into a certain group that’s the problem with modern society is that it’s just such a natural casual thing that like it’s sung about it’s in movies they have TV shows about it like it’s it’s just such a a thing that’s treated just so nonchalantly that like it’s not even special anymore and it’s not just for husband and wife my perspective can be confused by what I see on TV and what I see in movies and read and magazines but I think I know good well enough where I stand and understand that the church’s teaching is that sex is made for marriage and for that person that I hope God puts into my life forever see I get where people could be like taunted by the media but you have to take into consideration that it’s a person’s decision that you can’t blame everyone else for your decisions if you are curious about something and you want to do something and you make the decision to do it you have to be able to take the blame for it like you said Monique I I too feel that the media can’t really like um alter my opinion of how I feel on sex and and Chastity and waiting for marriage because I feel as though that’s something that I strongly believe in and I feel like I have so much faith in God and in myself and trust in him that no TV show or no movie can change that I agree with you like I feel like the more that I see sex being almost exploited um and like made to look so bad it almost makes me want to it makes me more want to wait for marriage and it kind of makes my faith stronger in the Song of Solomon we read I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine if we look at dating like we’re practicing and preparing ourselves as we look for the love of Our Lives we should keep in mind who we are and what we are doing along the way we don’t want to do things that can have negative effects on our future relationships we may not be married yet none of us are right but if it feels like marriage is our vocation in life then our partner exists somewhere in the world and they’re worth waiting for they are our beloved to be able to say to them honestly that we’ve been truly hope filled in waiting to meet them and love them and that we are ready to love them with all we’ve got it’s something that is hard to describe the gift that is for that person showing them how precious they are in your eyes and heart and Chastity really isn’t about saying no it’s about saying yes to true love and to seeing God in the person we love most Chastity really is about Freedom it’s a choice we make for ourselves that we make with our future spouse in mind let’s hear Kate’s personal experience with fighting temptation and remaining pure for her Mr Wright College you know I was in some relationships that really tested my dedication to my chastity and and that was a struggle but it was something that again I just so highly valued that I was willing to end relationships over it you know I entered into a relationship with a guy and he had had sex before and had said when we started dating like this is not going to be a problem like we won’t have sex this will be fine and we dated for um a while and then he was like well I figured you would change your mind about sex and but I was still stuck on like no you told me at the beginning that this wasn’t going to be an issue we tried to struggle through it for a few more months but ultimately you know I I knew that I wasn’t going to be able to change him and so I had to be willing to say this is not going to work um you know like we are not going to be able to be in a relationship without sex and I’m not willing to be in a relationship with sex and so we are not going to continue this relationship he really struggled with that and and it wasn’t easy for me you know was it was a comfortable thing we were really good friends there was a lot of security in our relationship and it was hard to sort of cut that person off but that was what was necessary for me to preserve my chastity and to continue striving for chastity and so I was blessed enough to meet someone who um we started out as friends and we we did decide that we wanted to start dating and we talked in our relationship and we knew that our Chastity was a priority and we both came to our relationship as virgins which was a struggle for both of us at different times and we were able to maintain that until we were eventually married which was really powerful for us and like I think it was a significant witness for the people around us to see that like this is possible and I think that that’s what teens need to hear a lot of times I tell people about my husbands and my witness you know they get a little like caught up in like you know that’s like Perfection like that’s not attainable but it really is attainable um and it’s not just the virginity part that should seem attainable but the Chastity that you can enter into a relationship with someone no matter what you’ve done before and decide with that person that your Chastity is a priority and that you’re going to live a chaste life within your relationship and continue that until you are married and then continue to live out Chastity in your marriage because just because we’re married now doesn’t mean it’s like a free-for-all we can do whatever we want we are still called to live chastely within our marriage I really admire Kate’s Chastity journey and I think that that’s something that I want to strive for and have a life of Chastity that she had and also um I want to thank her for being a role model to us and living a Chase life and that it actually can happen it’s like she did it in a world where there’s so much of a social influence and media influence and peer pressure and I really like how she said she did what was best for her because in today’s world the socially socially they advertise it like it is what it is it happens but she did what’s best for her and I really liked how she explained that yeah I mean like not being chased has kind of become a social norm and so for those few people um out there who do want to live a Chase life you know you’re kind of standing alone and I think that’s really hard sometimes I just met this guy recently that I work with and he just was the perfect gentleman like he was raised with like Old World manners and he holds the door open for girls and I was like wow like he still has like morals and values and there are a few amazing guys out there and it just like made me so hopeful like Mr Wright is out there and like he’s definitely worth waiting for if he’s going to be like him I agree that’s so cute we don’t need to look very far to see that our culture has become saturated with sexual images and its content in advertising music movies TV and fashion and rather than being taught about the sacredness of our sexuality we are constantly bombarded with messages that only seem to encourage selfish and lustful Behavior we live in a time when if it feels good do it seems to be the mainstream point of view without any consideration placed on the emotional physical and spiritual consequences that affect so many young people engaging in Risky Behavior while Chastity might not be the topic of discussion around the lunch table at school and maybe an uncomfortable subject to talk about with your family or even the person you’re dating know that God is the source of all strength and will provide you guidance if you ask for it finally our Spotlight guest Kate talks about the important role prayer plays in living chastely and provide some advice for young people who struggle with keeping their relationships pure I used my Rieger ready sort of as a role model and sort of like a go-to spiritual friend to be like hey help assistant out this is not as easy as it seems I prayed the the prayer to Saint Maria Goretti and asked for her intercession for my chastity at 10 o’clock every night for a long time and I really felt like that was keeping me grounded in what I was trying to do and that I was really trying to make my chastity a priority that I wanted to use my sexuality in the way that God was calling me to in a holy way so I think that prayer definitely is one of the first things that someone should put on their to-do list if they’re going to be trying to live a chaste life you have to be smart about the situations that you put yourself in and teens really hate when I say this but like don’t go in the basement alone with your boyfriend or girlfriend like that’s not a good thing good things don’t happen in basements when you’re by yourself like that’s I can tell you that um so you do it to be smart about your decisions and um in what you’re doing who you’re putting yourself in um in places alone with a question that comes up a lot when I talk about Chastity is what’s the line like how far is too far what can we do and no one ever likes the answer because it’s not an easy answer but the answer is that we shouldn’t be asking ourselves what the line is because then essentially we’re saying like how much can I get away with before I’m in trouble but really what we need to sort of rework our brains towards asking is is what I’m doing with this other person helping to get them closer to heaven because that’s ultimately what the call to marriage is the call to marriage is salvation of the other so when I entered into my marriage I signed up for getting my husband into heaven and my children whatever children may result from our marriage and so rewiring our brains to stop asking how far is too far into asking is this getting the other person to Heaven is this good for the other person am I moving towards marriage with this person and can I love this person the way I would be called to love this person in marriage God doesn’t want something for me that’s going to make me unhappy so even if it might make me a little uncomfortable it’s not something that would make me unhappy and we’re called to have that kind of faith in our calls to Chastity too I love how Kate said that like drawing the line is not necessarily for yourself there’s there’s a line but it’s to keep in mind of the other person and what if what you’re doing is getting them to heaven and I really liked that because in a way a relationship isn’t just about yourself you know you have to think about the other person that’s also on that Journey with you definitely I think that’s a great point you just brought up as she just said it was great I know um on my journey through Chastity I brought along my friend for the ride and we can’t wait to get married we talk about it all the time and we realized how important it is for us to be pure when we are married and that we should wait for our husbands and we signed the Chastity pledge together and we got these rings together they’re matching and whenever we see them we’re always reminded of our call to stay pure and sometimes we slip and lose our footing on our path but then we’re always there for each other to help us see clearly like whoa backup this is not what God wants this isn’t what we want either like sometimes you just get caught in the moment and having her there is such a help for getting me on the right track I think that um we can use our faith to help teach people about Chastity by just giving them small little bullet points you know like little bullet points that you get learned from your church teachings hopefully help them understand what Chastity is I know that um for whatever reason um in my life things will happen and this subject of Chastity will actually come up between like me and people I’m talking to and one time I was talking to a girl from my school who um probably isn’t the most chased person and I was talking about you know how great I think Chastity is and even with her way of thinking that it’s not that great she was so interested to hear what I had to say because how I thought was so different than you know what she thought and I think that even if I didn’t change you know her way of thinking about Chastity I planted a seed and I think that’s how you can kind of use your faith too to help others that’s awesome that you can just Inspire someone else like that Chastity isn’t easy it can be particularly challenging for guys who are pressured to live up to masculine stereotypes of showing strong physical affection engaging in risk-taking and even promiscuity for girls their Chastity can be challenged by wearing suggestive clothing or the willingness to go farther physically in a relationship as a way to keep that relationship going Chastity should never be about compromising your beliefs and who you are as a person it’s important to keep in mind with Saint John Paul II said only the chase man and the chase woman are capable of true love true love is not impossible as long as we stay true to ourselves and to others and of course to God so what are you willing to do for the love of your life and how do you see God in them we’d love to hear from you contact us at realfaithtv.com or send us a tweet and we’ll leave you today with this quote from blessed Teresa of Calcutta clean heart is a free heart a free heart can love Christ with an undivided love in Chastity convinced that nothing and nobody will separate it from his love Purity Chastity and virginity created a special Beauty in Mary that attracted God’s attention words to pray on and live by thanks for watching we’ll see you next time on real face TV God bless [Music] foreign [Music] 4.88 like celibacy the idea of Chastity is
4.88 hard for teens because they&;re
4.88 influenced so much by media honestly I
4.88 think just culturally
4.88 um it&;s very unpopular the the notion of
4.88 trustedy I think that the church is
4.88 trying to help us to be better people
4.88 and I don&;t think it&;s trying to like
4.88 limit our freedom at all
4.88 we&;re probably all familiar with the
4.88 popular marketing slogan sex sells seems
4.88 that everywhere we look these days our
4.88 media culture is only interested in
4.88 placing value on people&;s bodies trying
4.88 to fit into modern culture may make us
4.88 feel uneasy because we know that kind of
4.88 sexualization goes against what we
4.88 believe that our faith teaches us how to
4.88 love and honor others appropriately
4.88 there are many kinds of love and we
4.88 express each of them differently
4.88 depending on who we&;re talking about for
4.88 example the way we love our dog and the
4.88 way we love our parents are two
4.88 completely different things as Catholics
4.88 we are called to have a special kind of
4.88 love for our other half we need to be
4.88 chaste so that we can fully enter into a
4.88 pure and holy Union with our spouse
4.88 Chastity that&;s what we&;ll be talking
4.88 about today hi everyone I&;m Maddie and
4.88 I&;m Anthony and this is real Faith TV
4.88 first we&;d like to thank the members of
4.88 Saint Paul&;s Parish youth ministry from
4.88 Princeton New Jersey for helping us open
4.88 the show today and for sharing with us
4.88 their thoughts on Chastity before we
4.88 meet our studio guests let&;s meet our
4.88 Spotlight guest Kate Mayer the youth
4.88 minister at St Paul church in Princeton
4.88 she&;ll explain to us just what exactly
4.88 Chastity is all about and how it&;s
4.88 different from abstinence
4.88 I think it is particularly challenging
4.88 today for teens or for really anybody to
4.88 First understand and then Embrace uh you
4.88 know the church&;s teaching on Chastity
4.88 and and sexuality Chastity doesn&;t mean
4.88 um not having sex Chastity means using
4.88 our sexuality in the way that God has
4.88 called us to use it so for a single
4.88 person then the call to Chastity does
4.88 mean a call to celibacy whether that&;s
4.88 temporary celibacy because they&;re not
4.88 yet married or permanent celibacy
4.88 because they are called to the
4.88 priesthood of religious life a single
4.88 person is always called to Chastity in
4.88 the same way a married couple is always
4.88 called to Chastity when a married couple
4.88 makes their wedding vows they promise
4.88 that their marriage will be free total
4.88 fruitful and faithful it needs to be all
4.88 four of those things in order for them
4.88 to be living their marriage in terms of
4.88 Chastity the differences between
4.88 Chastity and abstinence or we think that
4.88 Chastity is the same thing as abstinence
4.88 Chastity is something that we are all
4.88 called to no matter where we are in our
4.88 lives many people are called to
4.88 abstinence either for a time in their
4.88 life or for their lifetime so Chastity
4.88 is that call to Holiness and that call
4.88 to use our sexuality in the way that God
4.88 has designed it whereas abstinence or
4.88 celibacy is abstaining from the act of
4.88 sex
4.88 I think it&;s important to note that
4.88 there is a difference between the two
4.88 and I think that&;s where a lot of teens
4.88 get caught up in the difference between
4.88 uh the different vocabulary words of
4.88 Chastity and of abstinence you know I
4.88 really like how she said that there&;s
4.88 Chastity in single life but there&;s also
4.88 Chastity and married life too and a lot
4.88 of people think that Chastity ends once
4.88 you get to married life but that&;s not
4.88 that&;s not really true at all and I
4.88 think what she said was really nice
4.88 well let&;s see what our studio guests
4.88 have to say on the subject okay then
4.88 they are Rebecca
4.88 Monique
4.88 John
4.88 Ella
4.88 and Juliana
4.88 [Music]
4.88 so why do you think Chastity tends to be
4.88 a confusing concept for us up until a
4.88 year ago I didn&;t even know what
4.88 Chastity was honestly like I knew the
4.88 church was teaching you shouldn&;t have
4.88 sex before you&;re married but I didn&;t
4.88 understand that Chastity was a way of
4.88 life and you know we see things on the
4.88 media that it&;s just like sex sells like
4.88 everything is you know skin is exposed
4.88 and people you know are just like not
4.88 even thinking about love is what love is
4.88 anymore and I feel like that just mixes
4.88 the messages between what&;s okay and
4.88 what&;s not well I feel like what also
4.88 makes it hard is like it&;s in human
4.88 nature like it&;s the way we&;re wired is
4.88 to have sex and like procreate right
4.88 I don&;t really think that it&;s
4.88 necessarily confusing I think it can be
4.88 almost like a daunting sort of subject
4.88 area and I think a lot of people are
4.88 afraid to really ask questions about
4.88 like how our faith stands on that area
4.88 so I think it&;s just like almost
4.88 un like not really touchable kind of
4.88 it&;s uncomfortable and so it&;s
4.88 overlooked
4.88 as Kate mentioned the church teaches
4.88 that Chastity means abstinence from
4.88 sexual relations before marriage and
4.88 complete Fidelity to one spouse during
4.88 marriage this means more than refraining
4.88 from sexual activity until we&;re married
4.88 it means not putting ourselves in
4.88 positions where we are tempted by
4.88 sexually impure thoughts and images by
4.88 living in this way we can be considered
4.88 pure however many times we equate Purity
4.88 with virginity and that once virginity
4.88 is lost a person is incapable of ever
4.88 being pure again in the eyes of God this
4.88 is not true virginity is itself a
4.88 beautiful gift meant for a future
4.88 husband or wife but as Kate describes
4.88 this idea can become distorted when we
4.88 fail to recognize our lifelong call to
4.88 Chastity and the fact that no matter
4.88 what sins were committed in the past we
4.88 should always be striving towards
4.88 Chastity let&;s see
4.88 I think often we get caught up in
4.88 talking about our virginity as opposed
4.88 to our Chastity and our virginity is
4.88 important when we are Discerning a
4.88 vocation to marriage and we want to be
4.88 able to you know give the gift of our
4.88 virginity to our spouse when we get
4.88 married so I&;ve talked to teens who have
4.88 had a sexual experience that they have
4.88 lost their virginity or they feel like
4.88 they&;ve tainted their virginity and
4.88 their Outlook becomes well I don&;t have
4.88 to try for tests anymore because I&;m
4.88 already ruined I already lost it it
4.88 doesn&;t matter anymore because I&;m not a
4.88 virgin and that&;s just not true because
4.88 God wants us in whatever state that
4.88 we&;re in in our lives to be striving for
4.88 Chastity even if we have made a mistake
4.88 in the past or we have sinned in the
4.88 past God wants us to continue to strive
4.88 for Chastity and God in his great Mercy
4.88 is always available to us in the
4.88 sacrament of reconciliation so that if
4.88 we have made a mistake in the past and
4.88 it has tainted or or hurt our virginity
4.88 in some way that we can still bring that
4.88 to God and say look I did this I messed
4.88 up and I want to repair my relationship
4.88 with you
4.88 God and um and then I want to move
4.88 forward and strive for chastity
4.88 so how can chassis help those who
4.88 struggle with their loss of virginity or
4.88 thoughts of impurity
4.88 um well every first write of every month
4.88 I attend a vigil and it&;s from Friday
4.88 night Saturday morning and during the
4.88 vigil all the teens have to leave their
4.88 pews and they have to kneel in front of
4.88 the Altar and we recite a chastity
4.88 prayer and I think that I know some
4.88 people whom I&;ve given the prayer to
4.88 that have gone through the loss of their
4.88 virginity and it has helped them to
4.88 realize that even though they&;ve lost
4.88 their virginity they haven&;t lost their
4.88 purity and like God still sees them as
4.88 pure in his eyes I love the whole
4.88 concept of um virgin reborn and like I
4.88 always think of that guy that was on The
4.88 Bachelor a while back this like good
4.88 looking guy you know had everything
4.88 going and then like right on the cover
4.88 of the magazine it&;s posted you know the
4.88 Virgin Bachelor and he wasn&;t actually a
4.88 virgin he was a virgin reborn but he
4.88 changed what he believed and now he has
4.88 his morals in check and like I feel like
4.88 if you honestly want to start over like
4.88 that like God&;s willing to give you a
4.88 second chance but I also think that
4.88 doesn&;t mean that we can throw it away
4.88 to begin with and experience these
4.88 experiences just to know that we&;re
4.88 going to get them back again yeah like
4.88 you should you should want to be chased
4.88 from the beginning but I feel like if
4.88 you turn around and you realize what you
4.88 were doing was wrong like you&;re totally
4.88 forgiven
4.88 in June of 2002 14 year old Elizabeth
4.88 Smart was kidnapped from her Salt Lake
4.88 City home and held in captivity until
4.88 her Escape nine months later during her
4.88 time in captivity she endured the
4.88 horrendous trauma of being the victim of
4.88 repeated sexual assaults nearly breaking
4.88 her dignity and her spirit to overcome
4.88 the horror our Spotlight guest Kate
4.88 shares with us the story of Elizabeth&;s
4.88 bravery and how it has affected her
4.88 views on abstinence-only teachings let&;s
4.88 check it out
4.88 Elizabeth Smart is a young woman she&;s
4.88 in her mid-20s and when she was a young
4.88 teen she was abducted from her home she
4.88 basically became a sex slave to her
4.88 abductors she was found and and was you
4.88 know has been since reunited with her
4.88 family and part of her story she talks a
4.88 lot now about abstinence only education
4.88 which she&;s actually against she was
4.88 raised in a subculture where she was
4.88 very much taught that once she lost her
4.88 virginity she would be dirty used up
4.88 unwanted and so when she lost her
4.88 virginity to her abductor against her
4.88 own will she had those feelings within
4.88 herself during her time in captivity she
4.88 wouldn&;t try and alert someone that she
4.88 had been abducted and try and break free
4.88 because she felt she had no value of
4.88 course God&;s first choice for us is that
4.88 we would maintain our virginity for our
4.88 spouse if we are called to marriage that
4.88 doesn&;t mean that once we lose our
4.88 virginity for whatever reason that
4.88 that&;s a reason to throw all everything
4.88 with about Chastity out the door there&;s
4.88 nothing that someone else can do to take
4.88 our dignity away from us and through the
4.88 sacrament of reconciliation you know if
4.88 we have sinned then God is able to you
4.88 know restore our our Grace our dignity
4.88 has been hurt to be able to restore that
4.88 through that Sacrament that he makes all
4.88 things new there&;s no sin that&;s too big
4.88 or too great for him to forgive and so I
4.88 feel that we are called in the church to
4.88 educate teens about abstinence in a good
4.88 way that it that gives them a healthy
4.88 view of the Dignity of the person and
4.88 their virginity and Chastity each sort
4.88 of in their own right Kate was talking
4.88 about the dignity that God created each
4.88 of us with how does chastity help us to
4.88 recognize this
4.88 I really like how in what she was saying
4.88 that she said that no one can take our
4.88 dignity away from us for me I think that
4.88 Chastity helps to reinforce the idea
4.88 that my body is the Temple of the Holy
4.88 Spirit
4.88 we were talking to Kate before the show
4.88 and
4.88 I asked her about like you know where a
4.88 line is drawn she said that like you
4.88 want
4.88 what&;s best for that other person and
4.88 what&;s going to get them to Heaven you
4.88 know and like if you&;re gonna have sex
4.88 before marriage is or that&;s breaking
4.88 commitment you know like that&;s not
4.88 going to get them closer to Heaven
4.88 that&;s not something everyone wants to
4.88 hear because yeah they want it so bad
4.88 but they know that they&;re not helping
4.88 that other person with what they&;re
4.88 doing yeah
4.88 when we practice Chastity in our
4.88 relationships and in our personal lives
4.88 we experience dignity in its fullest
4.88 form we show dignity to ourselves when
4.88 we make a conscious effort to not give
4.88 in to The Temptations around us we give
4.88 dignity to others when we show our love
4.88 and concern for them as individuals and
4.88 not as objects and we also show respect
4.88 to God when we trust his guidance and
4.88 his path for us when we enter into a
4.88 pure relationship with another person
4.88 and we can make a true friend in the
4.88 process make no mistake the church
4.88 regards sex is a wonderful gift from God
4.88 which holds a sacred place within
4.88 marriage let&;s go back to Kate where
4.88 she&;ll share more about what the church
4.88 teaches about sex and how through our
4.88 selfish desires sex can become
4.88 disordered through lust
4.88 so the church teaching about sex is
4.88 actually really a beautiful teaching and
4.88 I think that a lot of us get bogged down
4.88 with the do Nots of sex and we forget
4.88 that sex is really a good thing sex was
4.88 created by God and I think sometimes we
4.88 forget that we think that like we came
4.88 up with it on our own
4.88 um but we didn&;t it was in our design
4.88 and so God created sex and he created it
4.88 for two purposes only the first is so
4.88 that we could continue the human race we
4.88 use sex to procreate and sort of have a
4.88 participation in God with God in
4.88 creation the second one is to have that
4.88 bond between two people that would be
4.88 exclusive to those two people and that
4.88 is such a strong bond that it bonds them
4.88 together for Life bonding in babies is
4.88 sort of the shortcut that we use a lot
4.88 and if we&;re having sex only because it
4.88 feels good and not for the two purposes
4.88 that God created it to procreate and to
4.88 bond with that one person then we can
4.88 get a disordered view of sex and that&;s
4.88 what can lead to lust which would be a
4.88 selfie a use of sex for a selfish
4.88 purpose
4.88 how have your views on sex been shaped
4.88 by society and popular culture
4.88 I definitely think that in the media and
4.88 on TV some commercials especially like
4.88 Victoria&;s Secret they advertise it the
4.88 wrong way I think that in today&;s
4.88 society that sex is just glorified as
4.88 something that you need to do in order
4.88 to be cool or to be popular or to be
4.88 accepted into a certain group that&;s the
4.88 problem with modern society is that it&;s
4.88 just such a natural casual thing that
4.88 like it&;s sung about it&;s in movies they
4.88 have TV shows about it like it&;s it&;s
4.88 just such a a thing that&;s treated just
4.88 so nonchalantly that like it&;s not even
4.88 special anymore and it&;s not just for
4.88 husband and wife my perspective can be
4.88 confused by what I see on TV and what I
4.88 see in movies and read and magazines but
4.88 I think I know good well enough where I
4.88 stand and understand that the church&;s
4.88 teaching is that sex is made for
4.88 marriage and for that person that I hope
4.88 God puts into my life forever
4.88 see I get where people could be like
4.88 taunted by the media but you have to
4.88 take into consideration that it&;s a
4.88 person&;s decision that you can&;t blame
4.88 everyone else for your decisions if you
4.88 are curious about something and you want
4.88 to do something and you make the
4.88 decision to do it you have to be able to
4.88 take the blame for it
4.88 like you said Monique I I too feel that
4.88 the media can&;t really like um alter my
4.88 opinion of how I feel on sex and and
4.88 Chastity and waiting for marriage
4.88 because I feel as though that&;s
4.88 something that I strongly believe in and
4.88 I feel like I have so much faith in God
4.88 and in myself and trust in him that no
4.88 TV show or no movie can change that
4.88 I agree with you like I feel like the
4.88 more that I see sex being almost
4.88 exploited
4.88 um and like made to look so bad it
4.88 almost makes me want to it makes me more
4.88 want to wait for marriage and
4.88 it kind of makes my faith stronger
4.88 in the Song of Solomon we read I am my
4.88 beloveds and my beloved is mine
4.88 if we look at dating like we&;re
4.88 practicing and preparing ourselves as we
4.88 look for the love of Our Lives we should
4.88 keep in mind who we are and what we are
4.88 doing along the way we don&;t want to do
4.88 things that can have negative effects on
4.88 our future relationships we may not be
4.88 married yet none of us are right
4.88 but if it feels like marriage is our
4.88 vocation in life then our partner exists
4.88 somewhere in the world and they&;re worth
4.88 waiting for they are our beloved to be
4.88 able to say to them honestly that we&;ve
4.88 been truly hope filled in waiting to
4.88 meet them and love them and that we are
4.88 ready to love them with all we&;ve got
4.88 it&;s something that is hard to describe
4.88 the gift that is for that person showing
4.88 them how precious they are in your eyes
4.88 and heart and Chastity really isn&;t
4.88 about saying no it&;s about saying yes to
4.88 true love and to seeing God in the
4.88 person we love most Chastity really is
4.88 about Freedom it&;s a choice we make for
4.88 ourselves that we make with our future
4.88 spouse in mind let&;s hear Kate&;s
4.88 personal experience with fighting
4.88 temptation and remaining pure for her Mr
4.88 Wright
4.88 College you know I was in some
4.88 relationships that really tested my
4.88 dedication to my chastity and and that
4.88 was a struggle but it was something that
4.88 again I just so highly valued that I was
4.88 willing to end relationships over it you
4.88 know I entered into a relationship with
4.88 a guy and he had had sex before and had
4.88 said when we started dating like this is
4.88 not going to be a problem like we won&;t
4.88 have sex this will be fine and we dated
4.88 for um a while and then he was like well
4.88 I figured you would change your mind
4.88 about sex and but I was still stuck on
4.88 like no you told me at the beginning
4.88 that this wasn&;t going to be an issue we
4.88 tried to struggle through it for a few
4.88 more months but ultimately you know I I
4.88 knew that I wasn&;t going to be able to
4.88 change him and so I had to be willing to
4.88 say this is not going to work
4.88 um you know like we are not going to be
4.88 able to be in a relationship without sex
4.88 and I&;m not willing to be in a
4.88 relationship with sex and so we are not
4.88 going to continue this relationship he
4.88 really struggled with that and and it
4.88 wasn&;t easy for me you know was it was a
4.88 comfortable thing we were really good
4.88 friends there was a lot of security in
4.88 our relationship and it was hard to sort
4.88 of cut that person off but that was what
4.88 was necessary for me to preserve my
4.88 chastity and to continue striving for
4.88 chastity
4.88 and so I was blessed enough to meet
4.88 someone who um we started out as friends
4.88 and we we did decide that we wanted to
4.88 start dating and we talked in our
4.88 relationship and we knew that our
4.88 Chastity was a priority and we both came
4.88 to our relationship as virgins which was
4.88 a struggle for both of us at different
4.88 times and we were able to maintain that
4.88 until we were eventually married which
4.88 was really powerful for us and like I
4.88 think it was a significant witness for
4.88 the people around us to see that like
4.88 this is possible and I think that that&;s
4.88 what teens need to hear a lot of times I
4.88 tell people about my husbands and my
4.88 witness you know they get a little like
4.88 caught up in like you know that&;s like
4.88 Perfection like that&;s not attainable
4.88 but it really is attainable
4.88 um and it&;s not just the virginity part
4.88 that should seem attainable but the
4.88 Chastity that you can enter into a
4.88 relationship with someone no matter what
4.88 you&;ve done before and decide with that
4.88 person that your Chastity is a priority
4.88 and that you&;re going to live a chaste
4.88 life within your relationship and
4.88 continue that until you are married and
4.88 then continue to live out Chastity in
4.88 your marriage because just because we&;re
4.88 married now doesn&;t mean it&;s like a
4.88 free-for-all we can do whatever we want
4.88 we are still called to live chastely
4.88 within our marriage
4.88 I really admire Kate&;s Chastity journey
4.88 and I think that that&;s something that I
4.88 want to strive for and have a life of
4.88 Chastity that she had and also um I want
4.88 to thank her for being a role model to
4.88 us and living a Chase life and that it
4.88 actually can happen
4.88 it&;s like she did it in a world where
4.88 there&;s so much of a social influence
4.88 and media influence and peer pressure
4.88 and I really like how she said she did
4.88 what was best for her because
4.88 in today&;s world the socially socially
4.88 they advertise it like it is what it is
4.88 it happens but she did what&;s best for
4.88 her and I really liked how she explained
4.88 that
4.88 yeah I mean like not being chased has
4.88 kind of become a social norm and so for
4.88 those few people
4.88 um out there who do want to live a Chase
4.88 life you know you&;re kind of standing
4.88 alone
4.88 and I think that&;s really hard sometimes
4.88 I just met this guy recently that I work
4.88 with and he just was the perfect
4.88 gentleman like he was raised with like
4.88 Old World manners and he holds the door
4.88 open for girls and I was like wow like
4.88 he still has like morals and values and
4.88 there are a few amazing guys out there
4.88 and it just like made me so hopeful like
4.88 Mr Wright is out there and like he&;s
4.88 definitely worth waiting for if he&;s
4.88 going to be like him
4.88 I agree that&;s so cute
4.88 we don&;t need to look very far to see
4.88 that our culture has become saturated
4.88 with sexual images and its content in

4.88 and rather than being taught about the
4.88 sacredness of our sexuality we are
4.88 constantly bombarded with messages that
4.88 only seem to encourage selfish and
4.88 lustful Behavior we live in a time when
4.88 if it feels good do it seems to be the
4.88 mainstream point of view
4.88 without any consideration placed on the
4.88 emotional physical and spiritual
4.88 consequences that affect so many young
4.88 people engaging in Risky Behavior while
4.88 Chastity might not be the topic of
4.88 discussion around the lunch table at
4.88 school and maybe an uncomfortable
4.88 subject to talk about with your family
4.88 or even the person you&;re dating know
4.88 that God is the source of all strength
4.88 and will provide you guidance if you ask
4.88 for it finally our Spotlight guest Kate
4.88 talks about the important role prayer
4.88 plays in living chastely and provide
4.88 some advice for young people who
4.88 struggle with keeping their
4.88 relationships pure
4.88 I used my Rieger ready sort of as a role
4.88 model and sort of like a go-to spiritual
4.88 friend to be like hey help assistant out
4.88 this is not as easy as it seems I prayed
4.88 the the prayer to Saint Maria Goretti
4.88 and asked for her intercession for my
4.88 chastity at 10 o&;clock every night for a
4.88 long time and I really felt like that
4.88 was keeping me grounded in what I was
4.88 trying to do and that I was really
4.88 trying to make my chastity a priority
4.88 that I wanted to use my sexuality in the
4.88 way that God was calling me to in a holy
4.88 way so I think that prayer definitely is
4.88 one of the first things that someone
4.88 should put on their to-do list if
4.88 they&;re going to be trying to live a
4.88 chaste life you have to be smart about
4.88 the situations that you put yourself in
4.88 and teens really hate when I say this
4.88 but like don&;t go in the basement alone
4.88 with your boyfriend or girlfriend like
4.88 that&;s not a good thing good things
4.88 don&;t happen in basements when you&;re by
4.88 yourself like that&;s I can tell you that
4.88 um so you do it to be smart about your
4.88 decisions and
4.88 um in what you&;re doing who you&;re
4.88 putting yourself in
4.88 um in places alone with a question that
4.88 comes up a lot when I talk about
4.88 Chastity is what&;s the line like how far
4.88 is too far what can we do and no one
4.88 ever likes the answer because it&;s not
4.88 an easy answer but the answer is that we
4.88 shouldn&;t be asking ourselves what the
4.88 line is because then essentially we&;re
4.88 saying like how much can I get away with
4.88 before I&;m in trouble
4.88 but really what we need to sort of
4.88 rework our brains towards asking is is
4.88 what I&;m doing with this other person
4.88 helping to get them closer to heaven
4.88 because that&;s ultimately what the call
4.88 to marriage is the call to marriage is
4.88 salvation of the other so when I entered
4.88 into my marriage I signed up for getting
4.88 my husband into heaven and my children
4.88 whatever children may result from our
4.88 marriage and so rewiring our brains to
4.88 stop asking how far is too far into
4.88 asking is this getting the other person
4.88 to Heaven is this good for the other
4.88 person am I moving towards marriage with
4.88 this person and can I love this person
4.88 the way I would be called to love this
4.88 person in marriage God doesn&;t want
4.88 something for me that&;s going to make me
4.88 unhappy so even if it might make me a
4.88 little uncomfortable it&;s not something
4.88 that would make me unhappy and we&;re
4.88 called to have that kind of faith in our
4.88 calls to Chastity too
4.88 I love how Kate said that like drawing
4.88 the line is not necessarily for yourself
4.88 there&;s there&;s a line but it&;s to keep
4.88 in mind of the other person and what if
4.88 what you&;re doing is getting them to
4.88 heaven and I really liked that because
4.88 in a way a relationship isn&;t just about
4.88 yourself you know you have to think
4.88 about the other person that&;s also on
4.88 that Journey with you definitely I think
4.88 that&;s a great point you just brought up
4.88 as she just said it was great
4.88 I know um on my journey through Chastity
4.88 I brought along my friend for the ride
4.88 and we can&;t wait to get married we talk
4.88 about it all the time and we realized
4.88 how important it is for us to be pure
4.88 when we are married and that we should
4.88 wait for our husbands and we signed the
4.88 Chastity pledge together and we got
4.88 these rings together they&;re matching
4.88 and whenever we see them we&;re always
4.88 reminded of our call to stay pure and
4.88 sometimes we slip and lose our footing
4.88 on our path but then
4.88 we&;re always there for each other to
4.88 help us see clearly like whoa backup
4.88 this is not what God wants this isn&;t
4.88 what we want either like sometimes you
4.88 just get caught in the moment and having
4.88 her there is such a help for getting me
4.88 on the right track
4.88 I think that um we can use our faith to
4.88 help teach people about Chastity by just
4.88 giving them small little bullet points
4.88 you know like little bullet points that
4.88 you get learned from your church
4.88 teachings hopefully help them understand
4.88 what Chastity is
4.88 I know that um for whatever reason
4.88 um in my life things will happen and
4.88 this subject of Chastity will actually
4.88 come up between like me and people I&;m
4.88 talking to and one time I was talking to
4.88 a girl from my school who
4.88 um
4.88 probably isn&;t the most chased person
4.88 and I was talking about you know how
4.88 great I think Chastity is and
4.88 even with her way of thinking that it&;s
4.88 not that great she was so interested to
4.88 hear what I had to say because how I
4.88 thought
4.88 was so different than you know what she
4.88 thought and I think that even if I
4.88 didn&;t change you know her way of
4.88 thinking about Chastity I planted a seed
4.88 and I think that&;s how you can kind of
4.88 use your faith too
4.88 to help others that&;s awesome that you
4.88 can just Inspire someone else like that
4.88 Chastity isn&;t easy
4.88 it can be particularly challenging for
4.88 guys who are pressured to live up to
4.88 masculine stereotypes of showing strong
4.88 physical affection engaging in
4.88 risk-taking and even promiscuity for
4.88 girls their Chastity can be challenged
4.88 by wearing suggestive clothing or the
4.88 willingness to go farther physically in
4.88 a relationship as a way to keep that
4.88 relationship going Chastity should never
4.88 be about compromising your beliefs and
4.88 who you are as a person it&;s important
4.88 to keep in mind with Saint John Paul II
4.88 said only the chase man and the chase
4.88 woman are capable of true love true love
4.88 is not impossible as long as we stay
4.88 true to ourselves and to others and of
4.88 course to God so what are you willing to
4.88 do for the love of your life and how do
4.88 you see God in them we&;d love to hear
